But let me ask you something...

Have you ever in your adult life, laid awake at night after a long day thinking, "shouldn't my life be different than this; I thought I would have been much further ahead in my life by now?"

there is a silent tugging deep within your heart for more in life, which never really goes away.

Let me just tell you, I understand exactly what it’s like to want more; to dream of more, but think ‘maybe it just not meant for me, because I’m so tired of feeling stuck and frustrated with trying to figure out how to move my life forward. 

While I’m passionate about helping people to connect with their God-given purpose; to live their unique adventure, transform their world, and have fun on the journey, there is a driving-reason behind my passion for doing what I do.

You see, a few years back, some friends and I were on a small two-engine 6-seat aircraft, when one of the engines died mid-flight. The remaining engine was sputtering

"...we’re going to crash!"

We slammed into the ground on an abandoned airstrip, the wheels crashed up through the wings, the propellers twisted like tin foil, we smashed into the huge boulders the government had put onto the runway to deter criminal activities, and everything went black.

The trauma of that experience had a lasting effect on me and I was afraid to fly for about 5 years, but that plane crash made me realize that life is short, and that God gave me the gift of a second chance for doing something important and special with my life in this world;

and I felt that tug in my heart to become more, to contribute and give more, to make an impact in the world around me. 

So, I started my own journey for walking in alignment with God’s purpose and what I felt in my heart to do ...but as often is the case, those pesky roadblocks started popping up, and frustrations come from places you don’t expect.

You see, I grew up in a strict Baptist family, and the challenge was that what I felt in my heart to do, didn’t connect with the traditional religious church ideas, and this frustrated me.

One afternoon, I had a conversation with grandfather about what I felt; he’s an ‘old-time religion’ Baptist pastor, and here is how that went. 

He said, “boy, what are you rambling on about, philanthropy, media, government, business? Those things don't fit into the model of Jesus’ church; either you be a preacher, evangelist, deacon, or you sit in the congregation as a lay member”. 

...then he walked out of the room!

​because this wasn’t just anybody, this was my hero, the guy I had looked to for advice and wisdom for most of my life, and he simply dismissed me and walked off;

I thought to myself, “wow, that didn’t go well; why is God putting these things in my heart if He already knows they are impossible to fulfill?”

...and I felt even more confused.

In my life, I've often struggled to fit in with the crowd, even as a kid; and I've often been interested in and loved different things from my peers;

and as much as I tried to conform to their standards to fit in, it never worked, and I was always left miserable and frustrated, whenever I wasn't being my authentic true self.

But deep deep down inside, what I really was afraid of, was being rejected and ignored; of feeling insignificant and invisible.

A few minutes later, I got up from the living room, knocked on my grandmother’s bedroom door, walked in and sat on her bed; her room was that place where I always somehow felt safe.

She had overheard the conversation I had with my grandfather and said, “Boy, your grandfather means well, and he understands religion, but there is much he doesn’t understand about the kingdom";

She handed me a brown hardcover book, rubbed my head, smiled and said, “Son, go live your God-assigned adventure - because it is only the Creator you must answer to at the end of your journey”. 

...and it gave me a brand new perspective!

I could become anything in the kingdom; I could serve God is many different ways in the kingdom; I could do what was in my heart, and still know that I was in God’s will for my life; 'this was amazing!'

Since I always loved stories and reading because it was a passion I’d picked up from my grandmother, I wanted to see if I could encourage and touch the lives of others, by sharing what I was learning along my own journey of discovery and adventure.

So, I thought that the best way to start doing this would be through writing a book. I toyed with the idea for about a few years fiddling here and dabbling there, but without really committing to anything, and so I only made limited progress; 

My wife and I at the time, were really excited to start a new family, and as much as we tried and prayed, and cried and prayed, three years past, six years past, ten years past, and soon, dealing with doctors and fertility medicine without any results, became deeply discouraging and depressing.

And like a freight-car unhitched from the train that’s pulling it forward, I disengaged from the dream of doing something significant for God, of being a blessing to the world around me, and became absorbed in my own pain and misery - and that’s a bad place to be! 

You know, it’s easy for any of us to get disengaged with the dreams in our hearts when life throws those unexpected curve balls that hit us hard, and we have no answers to our hard questions. 

I’m sitting at my desk at work one day when my boss walks in and asks me to take an assignment that he knew was against my principles, so, I softly declined; he raised a tantrum in front of the office staff, and I ended up having my salary cut for 6 months.  

Now, can you imagine us, a young couple with money already tight, dealing with depression over having kids, and we’re trying to smile while doing ministry work because my wife was the worship leader at our church, and I was the lead musician?

...yet, I was silently struggling with what was in my heart to do for God, and the reality of feeling like a failure in everyday life. 

​...then it happened…

As I sat looking at the frustration and disappointment on my wife’s face that evening, something snapped deep within me, and I became angry and infuriated;

​...angry at the fact that something other than God, wanted to dictate our destinies;

and I had a choice, either I would succeed with those things I had in my heart to do, or I would die trying to see them come to pass, but I would no longer passively accept whatever life threw at me and act cowardly, as if I had no power to change things when God said “I can do all things through Christ”. 

​I opened my computer, logged onto the internet, and found a book publisher; I presented my idea, entered into the publishing contract and committed myself,

...then realized, I had no idea or experience with how to do all the stuff required to go from idea to print; 

​As these thoughts raced through my mind and I felt panic rising like a balloon in me, I simply opened my mouth and said, “No, I can’t turn back now, if there was ever a chance of partnering with God with what was in my heart, now is as good a time as any to get going”. 

I went home every evening after work, and sat and wrote for 3 hours; there were many days when I sat staring at my blank screen and a blinking cursor for hours. 

There were days that what I wrote didn't make any sense ...but I kept going, until finally, the draft manuscript was done and I sent it off to the publishing company.

A few weeks later, a printed copy of my first book was in my hands and I was ecstatic. 

Friends and family who told me they knew I had no background training in writing and thought my dream was a hopeless wish, were all speechless, because I had done something none of them thought possible and had never attempted themselves.

...I had separated myself from the pack.

With trembling hands I clicked on my Amazon.com link and saw it there, the listing for my first book and I whispered a silent prayer to God for His grace.

That was over 7 years ago...

much more confident in the gifts and abilities of God upon my life, as I had begun to unlock a new dimension of possibilities; 

I was energized and eager to see what else I could do to make a positive difference in the lives of others around me; but more to this, I had personally discovered, a God-assigned adventure, awaited me all my life, all I had to do was take a risk of faith, and engage with God on the journey, even when I couldn’t see or understand everything.

Among other things, the experience has also taught me that you and me, we have the capacity to become anything, and we most certainly can develop the capability to do anything ...to do what God has put in our hearts, to live our God-assigned adventure.
