Using A Teaspoon To Unleash The Power Of Your Life’s Purpose

Imagine that each person on this planet carried with them a teaspoon of soil or rock from Mt. Everest. Certainly Mt. Everest would shrink!

Those individual teaspoons of material from the tallest mountain on Earth now in the pockets of billions of people also wouldn’t mean much. Well I suppose each of us could put that small amount of mineral material into a bottle and keep it as a souvenir.

But like most souvenirs we collect, we tire of dusting them and they become added to the already crowded drawer or box of meaningless, useless items. A teaspoon of dirt, in a jar, in a drawer, that by itself, means little.

But, wait a minute…. What about it’s P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L?

From Webster’s Dictionary:

“Contribute”: to give or supply in common with others

What if each person on this planet brought their teaspoon of Mt. Everest to the site where it used to stand and contributed it? What would happen? Why, we would build the highest, mightiest mountain on Earth…TOGETHER.

Modern times finds we as human beings have become one of the most seperated species on thgis planet, at least in what we call the developed world. We separate ourselves in our homes. We don’t have time, we don’t have enough money, we are tired. We don’t have any time to ourselves, we go to work and slave for someone else’s goals and often receive a pay cheque for much less than we feel we are worth.

We provide for our families, do tons of tasks and chores in and for the home. Sacrifice for and fearfully protect our children. We amass debt to do many of these things. We feel trapped in a vortex of stress. And yet, with all this striving for what we think we want, if we are honest, we still feel unfulfilled and probably guilty for feeling that way!

Yet with all of this, we still feel empty, alone and that something important is still missing from our lives.

Of course it is—We are living our “separateness”. We are not connected to anyone or anthing significant—our lives are not connected to powerful purpose that propels us to contribute what we have to others or a worthy cause bigger than ourselves…and this process of not giving of ourselves, leaves us empty”.

You see, We usually only think of ways in which to contribute as volunteering our time or donating our money, but there is another, more intangible way to “add your teaspoon”. It is through fulfilling your life’s Purpose.

This means:

  • Living life intentionally, not by accident
  • Capturing the essence of what it means to be fully alive
  • Living by the powerful direction of your life
  • Making choices that increase the value of life to yourself and others
  • Being fulfilled today and every day
  • Living your life based on your values

The truth is, there is no true life Purpose that does not include contribution. And there is no contribution that does not include reward for you, tangible or intangible. You are here to make a difference on this planet. Wouldn’t you like to know that what you left behind made the difference in the lives of those you touch?

Life Purpose Begins & Ends With The Divine

How many people do you think ponder the meaning in life and if it has any meaning?

Do you think you are alone when wondering why things don’t make sense? With all the death and dying in the world, what is the purpose of life?  You are not alone as all of us have been made by God and even though we have distinct personalities we are in fact the same.  We all have the same needs, wants and searching for the same thing in life; happiness.

Sometimes, happiness seems out of reach.  You struggle and struggle and you can seem to keep afloat.  Like swimming in a toilet bowl you go a round and a round and a round until you’re finally flushed.   All the articles that I have ever read about what people wanted most out of life surprised me.  I expected them to say, cars, houses, fame, money, and prestige, but this is not what people feel they really want from life.

What I’ve found is that most people want peace, love, and joy.  I guess thats why Zig Ziglar said that money can buy you a house but it won’t buy you a home.  In fact I have read that some who become instant millionaires are the most loneliest people in the world.  They either become so arrogant and no one can stand to be around them. Some find out who there friends really are.

So what to you do to find the things that are important in life?

Start with relationships.  How is your relationship with your husband or significant other?  If its not everything its cracked up to be maybe you need to make it better or move on.  What about family members? Are they a great support to you or do they just bring you down?  How about your children?  How long has it been since you spent some quality time with them no matter how old they are? Quality time not just a trip to the movies.

One really important relationship is the one with God.  Your spiritual connection with God will always give you a deeper sense of meaning, purpose and fulfillment in your life. This is why so many people look towards spiritual enlightenment as a way to live a better life. Consider all your life connections or relationship…

Life Mapping Your Way To Purpose Filled Living

“Where there is no vision, the people perish” Pro 28:8 KJV

If we are really honest with ourselves, we would admit that success is much, much, more than monetary gains, grand titles, and educational degrees. And because success means different things for different people, it is important to plan for success by mapping out all the aspects of your life that you wish to be impacted in powerful ways.

If you were planning a hiking trip into the mountains, you would definitely plan where you wanted to go on your trek, and what tools were necessary for a successful expedition right? Well, the same principle applies as you work to engineer you success. For you to map out what you consider to be success in your own life, you need to clearly define a few details in the process. These details are: origin, destination, vehicle, backpack, landmarks, and route.

Let’s begin with…

Your Starting Point:  Who You Are?

Any map or journey has a starting point. Your origin is who you are right now. Most people when asked to introduce themselves would say, “Hi, I’m Don and I am a 27-year old, bank teller.” But the things is, the statement tells you nothing about who Don is; it only tells you his present preoccupation – and most of us are guilty of defining ourselves by our occupation. To gain insights about yourself, you need to look closely at your beliefs, values, and principles aside from your economic, professional, cultural, and civil status.

Moreover, you can also reflect on your experiences to give you insights on your good and not-so-good traits, skills, knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses. Upon introspection, Don realized that he was highly motivated, generous, service-oriented, but impatient. His inclination was in the legal field. Furthermore, he believed that life must serve a purpose, and that wars were destructive to human dignity.

Your Destination: A Clear Vision Of Who You Want To Be

“Who do want to be?” this is your vision. Now it is important that you know yourself so that you would have a clearer idea of who you want to be; and the things you want to change whether they are attitudes, habits, or points of view.

If you hardly know yourself, then your vision and targets for the future would also be unclear. Your destination should cover all the aspects of your being: the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. Continuing Don’s story, after he defined his beliefs, values, and principles in life, he decided that he wanted to have a life dedicated in serving her fellowmen through the justice system.

Your Vehicle: Your Mission

A vehicle is the means by which you can reach your destination. It can be important to your mission or vocation in life. To a great extent, your mission would depend on what you know about yourself. Based on Don’s personal assessment, he decided that he was suited to become a lawyer, and that he wanted to become one. His chosen vocation was a Lawyer. Describing his vision-mission fully: it was to live a life dedicated to serving her fellowmen as a lawyer prosecuting criminals.

Your Travel Bag: Your knowledge, skills, and attitude

Food, drinks, medicines, and other travelling necessities are contained in a bag. Applying this concept to your life mapping process, you also bring with you certain knowledge, skills, and attitudes. These determine your competence and help you in attaining your vision. Given such, there is a need for you to assess what knowledge, skills, and attitudes you have at present, and what you need to gain along the way.

This two-fold assignment will give you insights on your landmarks or measures of success. Don realized that he needed to gain professional knowledge and skills in law so that he could become a lawyer. He knew that he always had a a hard time focusing while reading on any subject, so he realized that this was something he wanted to change because researching, reading and interpreting what was read is important to any legal professional.

Your Landmarks and Route: S.M.A.R.T. objectives

Landmarks confirm if you are on the right track while the route determines the travel time. So, in planning out your life, you also need to have landmarks and a route. These landmarks are your measures of success. These measures must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound.

Thus you cannot set two major landmarks such as earning a master’s degree and a doctorate degree within a period of three years, since the minimum number of years to complete a master’s degree is two years. Going back to Don as an example, he identified the following landmarks in his life map: completing a bachelor’s degree in law by the age of 30; earning her specialization in criminal law by the age of 33; getting deployed in local prosecutor’s office of his city by the age of 34; and serving as lawyer in crime infested areas by the age of 36.

Your Anticipated Turns, Detours, and Potholes

The purpose of your life map is to minimize hasty and spur-of-the-moment decisions that can make you lose your way. But oftentimes, our plans are modified along the way due to some inconveniences, delays, and other situations beyond our control. Like in any path, there are turns, detours, and potholes thus; so you must anticipate them and adjust accordingly.

Obsession: The Key To Finding Your Life’s Purpose
